Wedding Photographer in Waipū

July 31, 2026

Waipū sits at the southern end of Northland, about 40 minutes south of Whangārei, and Waipū Cove is one of the nicer beaches in the area to get married on. This is a short guide to photographing a Waipū wedding.

Why Waipū works

Waipū Cove is a long, open beach with dunes and headlands at either end, so you get room to move and a real sense of space. The village and surrounding farmland give you greener, sheltered options a short drive away, and the coast down here catches lovely late light.

That range is useful on the day. If the beach is windy, we can step back to the dunes or a sheltered spot without leaving the area.

Spots around Waipū

  • Waipū Cove. A long surf beach with dunes and headlands, good for open, spacious portraits.
  • The headlands and dunes. Shelter and a bit of height when the beach is exposed.
  • Village and farmland. Greener, private options a short drive inland.

My Northland wedding venues guide can help if you're still choosing where to hold the day.

Worth planning for

  • Wind on the open beach. The cove can be exposed, so a sheltered backup is worth having in mind.
  • Travel time. Waipū is toward the southern edge of my patch, so I confirm the drive in your quote up front.
  • Light. The coast catches good late light, so I build portraits around golden hour. See the timeline guide.

How I work

Calm and documentary, following the day as it happens and choosing settings to suit the weather and the light.
