Wedding Photographer in the Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is one of the most beautiful places in the country to get married, and it is right on my doorstep. I'm a Whangārei-based wedding photographer working across Northland, and the Bay, from Paihia and Russell to Kerikeri and the Waitangi coast, is one of my favourite parts of the region to shoot.

Why the Bay of Islands is so good for wedding photos

It is the light and the water. The Bay is a maze of coves, beaches and islands, so you are never far from a sweeping view or a quiet stretch of sand. Morning light comes in soft off the water, and on a clear evening the golden hour over the harbour is hard to beat. It photographs beautifully in almost any weather, too: even a moody, overcast Northland day gives you gorgeous soft light and dramatic skies.

Popular spots around the Bay

A few of the areas couples marry in and around:

• Paihia. The hub of the Bay, with easy access to beaches, jetties and waterfront venues.
• Russell. A short ferry across the water, full of history and charm, with beautiful old trees and coastal light.
• Waitangi. Iconic coastal grounds and views out across the Bay.
• Kerikeri. A little inland, with gardens, orchards and the historic Stone Store basin nearby (I've a separate Kerikeri guide too).

A few things worth planning for

• Travel and ferries. If your day crosses the water (say a Russell ceremony with photos elsewhere), build the ferry or drive time into your timeline so nothing feels rushed.
• Season and light. Northland summers run late, with golden hour stretching past 8pm in December and January, then pulling back toward 6pm by April. Your timeline should flex around it.
• Weather. The Bay is stunning rain or shine, but a loose wet-weather plan means you can relax if the forecast turns.
• Accommodation. Peak-season weekends fill early up here, for you and your guests, so it is worth booking well ahead.
