Wedding Photographer in Mangawhai

Mangawhai sits at the southern end of Northland, about an hour and a half south of Whangārei. It has quietly become one of the busier spots on the Northland wedding map, and I travel down there fairly often. This is a short, practical guide to what it's like to photograph a wedding in Mangawhai.

Two very different settings in one place

The thing that makes Mangawhai useful is that you get two quite different coastlines within a few minutes of each other. On one side is the open surf beach at Mangawhai Heads, with dunes and big west-facing sky. On the other is the estuary and harbour, calm, sheltered water that sits still on a good evening. Behind both is rolling farmland, and there are a few cafes and vineyards nearby.

For photos that means you can go from a wide, windswept beach to quiet reflective water without a long drive, which gives your gallery some range without eating into your day.

Spots couples use around Mangawhai

• Mangawhai Heads and the surf beach. Big open coast and dunes. Best late in the day, since it faces west and gets the sunset.
• The estuary and village side. Sheltered, calmer water, good when the coast is windy.
• Farm and vineyard settings inland. A greener, more private option if you want space away from the public beach.

A couple of things worth planning for

• Travel time. Mangawhai is the far southern edge of my patch, so it's worth confirming the drive in your timeline and quote up front. It's a straightforward one, I just like it planned rather than assumed.
• Wind on the open beach. The surf beach can be exposed. A sheltered spot on the estuary side makes an easy backup if the day turns.
