Wedding Photographer on the Tutukaka Coast

July 31, 2026

The Tutukaka Coast is one of the most striking stretches of the Northland coastline, about 30 minutes northeast of Whangārei. It's a run of white-sand bays and headlands, and it's a lovely part of the region to photograph a wedding. Here's a short, practical guide.

What the coast gives you

A lot of variety in a small area. Within a few minutes you can move between the bays at Matapouri, Whale Bay and Sandy Bay, the headlands and coastal tracks in between, and the Tutukaka marina with its boats and water. The Poor Knights sit offshore, so on a clear day you get real depth on the horizon.

For a wedding that means clean, bright beach settings when it's calm, and dramatic headland backdrops when there's a bit of weather about.

Spots around Tutukaka

  • Matapouri and Whale Bay. Sheltered white-sand bays, beautiful in soft light.
  • Sandy Bay. A more open surf beach with dunes.
  • Tutukaka marina. Boats, water and a different, less-beachy backdrop.
  • The headlands and tracks. Elevated coastal views if you're up for a short walk.

If you're still deciding where to base the day, my Northland wedding venues guide can help.

Worth planning for

  • Tides and access. Some of the bays change a lot with the tide, so it's worth checking the day's tide when we plan portrait timing.
  • It's a public coast in summer. The popular bays get busy on a fine weekend, which is easy to work around with a bit of planning.
  • Light and travel. It's a short, easy drive from Whangārei, and I plan portraits around golden hour. More on timing in the wedding day timeline guide.

How I work here

Quietly and led by the day. I know the coast well, so I can move you between shelter and open beach depending on the weather without any fuss.

FAQ

Do you cover the Tutukaka Coast for weddings?

Yes, often. It's about 30 minutes from Whangārei, so it's an easy area for me and travel is usually included in your quote.

Which Tutukaka beach is best for photos?

It depends on the day and the light. Matapouri and Whale Bay are gorgeous in calm, soft conditions, while Sandy Bay suits a bigger, more open feel. We choose on the day to match the weather.

What does a Tutukaka wedding photographer cost?

My wedding collections start at $2,375, priced by coverage hours. There's a full breakdown in my wedding photography cost guide.

How far ahead should we book?

Peak summer dates on the coast book out early, often twelve to eighteen months ahead. More in my booking guide.
