Wedding Photographer at Whangārei Heads & Ocean Beach
Whangārei Heads is about 35 minutes from town, out where the harbour opens to the coast under Mount Manaia. It's one of the parts of Northland I photograph most, partly because it's close to home and partly because you get a lot of variety in a small area.
Why the Heads works well for weddings
In a short drive you can move between the big surf of Ocean Beach, the sheltered harbour bays like McLeod Bay and Parua Bay, and the bush and coastal tracks around Bream Head. Over all of it sits Mount Manaia, which gives you a strong, recognisable backdrop without having to do anything to earn it.
That mix matters on a wedding day. If the open beach is windy, the harbour side is usually calmer, so we can adapt to the weather without leaving the area.
The settings you get out there
- Ocean Beach. A long open surf beach. It faces east, so the light is best earlier in the day.
- The harbour bays. Sheltered, calm water, good for portraits when the coast is exposed.
- Mount Manaia as a backdrop. Visible from much of the Heads, and hard to beat for a sense of place.
My guide to Northland wedding venues can help if you're still deciding where to base the day.
Worth knowing about the light and weather
- Ocean Beach faces east. Morning and midday light is lovely there, while the sun sets behind the hills, so we plan golden-hour portraits accordingly rather than expecting a beach sunset.
- Wind. The open coast can be exposed. The sheltered bays are a reliable backup.
- It's close to town. Travel is easy from Whangārei, which keeps the logistics simple.
I go into timing and light in more detail in the wedding day timeline guide.
How I work at the Heads
Calm and documentary, following the day as it happens. Because I'm out this way often, I know where the light and shelter tend to be at different times, which helps the day run without fuss.
FAQ
Do you cover Whangārei Heads and Ocean Beach?
Yes, regularly. It's about 35 minutes from Whangārei, so it's an easy area for me and travel is usually included in your quote.
Can we get photos with Mount Manaia in them?
Yes. Manaia is visible from a lot of the Heads, so it's easy to work it into your portraits for a real sense of where you married.
What does a wedding photographer at the Heads cost?
My collections start at $2,375, priced by coverage hours. The full explanation is in my wedding photography cost guide.
Is Ocean Beach good for sunset photos?
Ocean Beach faces east, so the sun sets behind the hills rather than over the water. It's still beautiful in the evening, we just plan golden hour with that in mind, and the harbour side catches lovely late light.
